FAQ

Hand tied extensions,
explained

Everything you need to know about hand tied extensions — from row counts and washing to maintenance every 6–8 weeks. New extension clients should start with a free consultation so we can talk through your goals in person.

Hand Tied Extension Questions

Are hand tied hair extensions bad for your hair?

No — hand tied hair extensions do not have to be damaging. When a proven installation method is properly applied by a professional hair stylist, hand tied extensions are not damaging to your natural hair. The key is choosing a well-trained, knowledgeable stylist.

Do I need a consultation before getting extensions?

Yes. Consultations are necessary for all new extension clients at Bloom Salon ATX — and they are always free. During your consultation we review your hair density, your length and volume goals, and the right extension plan for you.

How many rows of hand tied extensions do I need?

The number of rows depends on your current hair density plus the volume and length you want. Most clients choose 1, 2, or 3 rows — we discuss this thoroughly during your free consultation so your extensions look natural and feel comfortable.

Can you wear your hair up with hand tied extensions?

Yes! You can absolutely wear your hair up with hand tied extensions, and they remain undetectable — that is one of the biggest benefits of the method we use.

What extension services does Bloom Salon ATX offer?

We offer partial (1 row), full (2 rows), and extra full (2.5–3 rows) hand tied extension installs, row maintenance, corner move-ups, and extension removal. We are also a full-service salon offering signature color looks, cuts, styling, and treatments.

Extension Maintenance & Hair Care

How often should you wash hand tied extensions?

Most stylists recommend washing once or twice a week at most to maintain the integrity of your extensions. Brush before wetting the hair, be gentle, and separate the rows while shampooing so the attachment points get thoroughly clean.

Is it bad to let hand tied extensions air dry?

Air drying is not bad, but the top of the wefts should always be dried completely with a blow dryer. Wefts that stay moist can swell, create bulk at the weft line, and cause extension hair to shed prematurely.

How often do extensions need to be re-installed?

Extensions should be moved up every 6–8 weeks. Keeping this cadence avoids tension on your natural hair and keeps styling and everyday maintenance easy.

What products should I use with extensions?

Use professional sulfate- and paraben-free products focused on hydration and moisture. Plan on a quality shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, leave-in conditioner, and serum. Avoid protein-heavy or bond-building products unless your stylist approves them — protein can make extension hair brittle.

Hand Tied Extension Do's & Don'ts

What should I do to keep my extensions looking their best?

Maintain your move-up appointments every 6–8 weeks, brush multiple times daily so hair doesn't snag, keep your hair and scalp clean around the wefts, be gentle when brushing and styling, and use professional sulfate- and paraben-free products focused on hydration.

What should I avoid with hand tied extensions?

Don't sleep with wet hair (it causes tangling and matting), don't use a cotton pillowcase — switch to silk, don't use reparative or bond-building products with protein unless your stylist approves them, and don't trust your extensions to an improperly trained stylist.
